There's a certain amount of skepticism concerning 30 Odd Foot of Grunts.Is it fair that Russell Crowe should win Oscars, snog Meg Ryan, and be a successfulrecording artist as well? Since fairness rarely factors into real life, it'sonly fitting that the new 30OFOG album, Other Ways of Speaking, is no mere celebrityvanity project and actually stands as a decent album. It doesn't hurt that30OFOG has been together for over a decade, predating Crowe's worldwidefilm profile. Crowe has a vocal delivery that suggests a less strident ElvisCostello ("Inside Her Eyes"), but one that is slightly more proneto lyrical cliché and melodrama. Still in all, Crowe's duet withChrissie Hynde on "Never Be Alone Again" is a potent pairing and thereare enough impressive rootsy rock moments ("Painted Veil," the chugrocking "What's Her Name?," the jangly title track) to keep thelistener from questioning Crowe's musical motives.
