There are many times that I try out a CD just because I think the cover looks cool. 9 times out of 10, it just doesn’t do it for me. But, oooooh, that 10th time. The Mother Truckers grabbed me. By the third listen, I was completely hooked. There’s something magical in the interplay of the voices of Teal Collins and Josh Zee that truly rocks me. George and Tammy, and Conway and Loretta may have known a thing or two, but Josh and Teal give it some twang and a real alt.country flavor. They trade lead vocals—he takes one song, she takes the next, while the other supplies backing vocals and outstanding harmonies. The standouts for me are “Nothing There” and the title track, “Broke, Not Broken.” I find myself bouncing (a little higher) in the car while driving when either or those two songs is playing. Dig it.
